If there is one thing humans have some skill in, is taking a continuous spectrum, carving it into discrete pieces, and then treating the pieces as fundamentally different.

An instinct to label things is part of what makes humanity special among the beasts.
It was an important first step towards language and intellectual thought.
As instincts go, it's far from perfect, but it's probably done us a lot more good than harm.
I blame Aristotle for all of this.
