I used to spend a lot of time on metafilter, but I've soured on it's politics. Like I knew I was pretty far to the left of a lot of folks on the site and I'm ok hanging out with people I disagree with. But the self-righteous nastiness and lack of self-awareness is really offputting. (eg https://www.metafilter.com/167767/Covering-America-for-the-world-including-Americans#7073563) If you you plot politics on a graph, that user is closer to the Rs than to me.
The kind of mefites that drive me up the wall are the ones who comment in one thread about how Republicans are all fascists trying to kill trans people and you should totally punch nazis, but when you point out elsewhere that the policies they support are really bad for say Syrians or disabled or poor people they claim they're "just being pragmatic."
It's pretty common for people to take a stance similar to the commenter linked above - that any critique of their ideas is like lumping them in with Republicans. (Which to them is the same as saying they're evil.)
They don't recognize that 1) on some scales they are closer to Republicans than the leftist they're talking to, that the political spectrum is much larger than they imagine and 2) their own positions also put the very lives of some groups at risk
@susannah I'm as left as they come but agree, we live in an age of such polarized views. The world isn't as black and white as left and right but everyone is being pushed to the edges.sad times
