It's pretty common for people to take a stance similar to the commenter linked above - that any critique of their ideas is like lumping them in with Republicans. (Which to them is the same as saying they're evil.)

They don't recognize that 1) on some scales they are closer to Republicans than the leftist they're talking to, that the political spectrum is much larger than they imagine and 2) their own positions also put the very lives of some groups at risk

Anyways, I've lost a lot of respect for a lot of people on metafilter. And that makes it really hard to participate in good faith or even lurk.

And it feels shitty to be so unwelcome in an online community I put so much of my heart in.

@susannah I'm as left as they come but agree, we live in an age of such polarized views. The world isn't as black and white as left and right but everyone is being pushed to the edges.sad times

@susannah it feels that way talking to most staunch liberals or bourgeois "progressives" IRL, too.

@susannah I'm sorry for your loss. It is difficult to fall out of a community, when you realize you don't have confidence in them anymore.
