so I set up a masto instance just to see how the process goes. but is there some reason I'd actually use it instead of octodon.social?

Social is overwhelmingly crowded. On a smaller instance you can hear yourself think, and maybe even start discussions about things you care about
@stylus You want to have somewhere that's mostly about a narrow topic?
You want to have different social rules/federations?
