Back when I was active on Usenet it was considered pretty normal to have house rules for any newsgroup, you were also expected to refrain from posting long enough to notice and learn the unspoken customs (this was called "lurking").

Nowadays people see it as an orchestrated attack against free speech, shout references to 1984, and threaten to move elsewhere.

Yet the ones asking us all to behave politely are called "hypersensitive"?

honestly tho, the flourishes and prods and experiments and constant meta conversation that emerges only at the beginning of networks/products/media totally light my brain up

(see: blogs before warbloggers, GNE begetting Flickr, 2009 era twitter, early iphone app store, first wave of slack bots, tilde, introduction of Instastories)

it's geeks testing building materials, trying to figure out structures, what kind of activities and friendships the spaces encourage.

then later: meh who cares.
