I've recently seen another couple of home server or personal could type projects. Please, if you're doing this, think about whether basing it on Docker is wise.

Almost certainly there are other container systems which aren't receiving unspecified funding from the CIA. Docker could also be bought by Microsoft, Facebook or another big tech company and then do you really want your system associated with that? Definitely worth consideration.

«In 1993, John Gilmore famously said that "The Internet interprets censorship as damage and routes around it." That was technically true when he said it but only because the routing structure of the Internet was so distributed. As centralization increases, the Internet loses that robustness, and censorship by governments and companies becomes easier.»

D'après les reportages, en archéologie, un trésor est inestimable ou n'est pas !

I haven't been on masto for a while, because I'm teaching a short course in Utah on research reproducibility.

Materials if anyone is interested: vickysteeves.gitlab.io/2018-uu

Some observations about Utah:
- it NEVER gets dark here!! sundown is like 10pm
- everyone is unreasonably nice
- there is no one in SLC after 8pm
- the elevation is so sneaky! I gain/lose 800 feet just going to the building where I'm teaching from the hotel.

I like the idea of having another /usr hierarchy in ~/.local

Does anyone have any resources on the dangers of #OpenData / #OpenMapping in terms of threats/risks to human rights. Specifically #indigenous peoples, land rights, data extractivsm? Asking for someone else.

Trying to do the right thing with : I deleted all stale forks (62) and empty repos (9). That leaves 20 repos, of which most are one-off projects that I can easily move elsewhere. All those stale forks are what makes the overall amount of Github repos so big, mind you, so I'm trying to make it less relevant thatln it actually is. Those few repos that are active will require more effort and will stay there for the moment.

What to do when a website has TLS issues with on , but works flawlessly with Firefox on Windows and on Fedora? It also has this strange behavior that doesn't even let me bypass the problem temporarily...

A git repository is not the right place for a TODO file that I want to sync among multiple devices. Now I'm leaning towards Syncthing, that I already use for other purposes.

Standards are documentation, not legislation. They explain how to make your code do the same thing as mine. Sadly, we write them in an imperative voice, and don't explain how we chose them. Alex has more to say: infrequently.org/2018/06/effec #indieweb #microformats

Pretty good popular article on the Aegean Dendrochronology Project and the search for an absolute chronology of the Ancient Near East timesofisrael.com/upstart-carb

we should all take a step back and realize what is going on: we're writing history together. #mastodon (and #pleroma if you want :) is the first openly developed social network that grows beyond a niche. as @ckeen put it well, it brings along issues that just never came up before. now we need to find a way together to overcome these issues. there are no precedents. it's altogether new. hold your head high up. experiment. don't take it too seriously. forgive.

Had time to waste in the city between work appointments, went to the park and made friends with some ducklings

“10 years ago today:
• jQuery was battling Dojo, YUI, and mootools for dominance
• node.js wasn't a thing
• Firebug was the only real developer tool
• Chrome wasn't released yet
• nobody took JavaScript devs seriously

Things change a lot in 10 years.”
