The infliction of cruelty with a good conscience is a delight to moralists. That is why they invented Hell.

Two in one: a newly-identified bilingual papyrus!

A newly-identified papyrus in Latin and Arabic has recently been discovered in the British Library’s papyrus collections.

In the course of the Library’s collaboration with a Naples-based research project, Dario Internullo has identified an unique document: a private letter from 7th- to 9th-century Egypt written in two languages.

As seen from Switzerland, the US seems to be an insane dystopia if you look hard enough. «If a friend appears to be having suicidal thoughts, DON'T CALL THE POLICE. Check in yourself or have a friend do so. Otherwise you increase their risk of death.» says @cwebber in a comment on the Chelsea Manning police action. And here I am thinking that Switzerland could do much to improve the police...

90% of animals did NOT appear at the same time in evolutionary history. Now waiting for the first creationist to cite that claim.

Some people have started working on #"GitPub is a #decentralized #federation protocol based on the W3C's #ActivityPub, which extends #ActivityStream 2.0. It provides a server to server API for pull request, #forking and subscription of repositories provided by #Git web services."

As a software developer, it pains me to admit, but must be shouted from the rooftops anyways:

Technology can't fix harassment.

Anyone expecting tech to fix harassment only enables the clever assholes.

Algorithms that boost messages are overwhelmingly used by the most vocal and ruthless of any population to polarize the rest of that population.

Let people boost messages, not algorithms. Let people stop harassment, not algorithms.

And PAY the moderators and community leaders their due!

I love you bunch! Yes, you! Even the ones I disagree with in (be it publicly or in silence).

One of the things I love about Fediverse is, despite all the wars and in-fighting, we seem to survive it by mending our ways, learning from mistakes, and level-up on our empathy levels, as well as our iterations.

At least, this is what I see from my standpoint of view.

hey everyone. if you don't know what hecke.rs is, it's a community project i sorta run that offers tools for people around here.

i just launched a new one, md.hecke.rs/. it's an instance of HackMD - think Google Docs or Hackpad/Etherpad, but with Markdown, open-source, and hosted by someone who actually cares.

feeel free to use it. or don't. it's up to you.

My GitLab is now live!

tech bros on twitter arguing against libraries in favour of "spotify for books" because authors/publishers (or rather VC investors) can't use libraries as their primary source of profit is just a perfect example of silicon valley's willful ignorance or complete contempt for the ideas of public service and the commons.

rather than everybody creating a public space and sharing resources they'd have us all completely separated and paying countless times over for the same thing.
