Yesterday I nuked my Academia.edu account for good, after one year of inactivity. I no longer want to be associated nor support a for-profit entity that exploits academic labor, especially from marginalised people who get a false sense of belonging (the infamous "independent" subdomain). Two recent pieces: https://www.diggitmagazine.com/column/end-academiaedu-how-business-takes-over-again and https://sarahemilybond.com/2017/01/24/deleteacademiaedu-the-argument-for-non-profit-repositories/
I've been critical of the service for a long time, FWIW. Proprietary for-profit platforms are just that, no matter how they brand themselves. Use ORCID, Zenodo, SocArxiv, HumCommons, self-host... just don't be lazy and don't delegate the dissemination of your research!
