Please can we stop depending on Google Summer of Code to develop good FOSS?
Or at least do not celebrate it?
@steko The software resulting from gsoc rarely exceeds prototype quality unless an existing developer on the project gets the grant.
Little money is paid out to students compared to a regular entry level job in IT.
Mentors are forced to file evaluation reports about students which is essentially pre-screening of candidates for Google's HR department.
Mentoring takes a lot of time and is not compensated.
I mentored a few times when gsoc started out. Won't do it again.
