@cws Here's something you might not know about SDDI: the payments are about 25% below the federal poverty line. If you /ever/ have more than $2,000 in assets (assets, not cash) you lose that income. The government makes it literally impossible to save money and not be in poverty.

So yeah, I have friends who need help making groceries and rent sometimes. I'm happy to help because people deserve to live, and being part of society means helping each other.

To be soley profit-driven is to be antisocial and inhuman.

So let me be clear: capitalism is a system whose entire goal is to concentrate wealth at the top, exploit workers, maintain social stratification and poverty, and unsustainably plunder the planet. It has no place in an equitable world.

I'm surprised that an instance that pitched itself the way octodon.social does seems to have people heavily attached to the idea of capitalism. That's not what I expected here.
