TBH, I'm kinda tempted to buy a @Purism Librem13 laptop just to see if it runs but $1,400 plus tax/shipping is a bit steep for an experiment. :)

Yeah, I have an old 2013 MacBook. It's actually still going strong and decently fast, so I was thinking about maybe donating it to someone. Anyway, I do want a new laptop and as I haven't exactly kept up with computer hardware since I switched, I know very little about it.

@jordyd @Purism

If your Macbook still works, you could always try installing Linux or a BSD on it. :)

@starbreaker @Purism

Yes! I could! I installed Linux on it at one point. I don't remember why I uninstalled it.

@starbreaker @Purism

It may have had something to do with the fact that I use iCloud extensively. Of course, the best response to being locked into a product line is to go back to that product line, right? :)

@starbreaker @Purism

Honestly most of the reasons for switching to macOS didn't work out the way I imagined. On the other hand, the battery life is phenomenal.

@starbreaker @Purism I'd love to try out the Librem 5 phone.

@carrie @Purism I wouldn't mind trying one of those myself, especially if I could jack it into external storage, a widescreen display, a keyboard, and a trackball. Being able to use a Librem 5 phone as a desktop computer would justify going back to Linux from BSD.

@starbreaker I think it'd be a very steep curve for me. My OSes up to this point have been Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. I've toyed with Linux, but even though I like a certain level of control I feel like you have to control Linux too much just to get it to work. I wouldn't even know where to start with BSD.

@starbreaker @Purism The wifi chip is not yet supported by #OpenBSD's athn driver, unfortunately (driver only supports the 2-stream MIMO ath9k cards at present, but purism use 3-stream MIMO ones). Although you could probably open the laptop and swap the wifi card with another one which is supported, or use a supported USB wifi dongle.
