100% agree. Browsers are great at what they were originally made for, plus a lot more on top. But for a cross-platform local app runtime, there are much better options.

(I just wish the packaging story for PyQT was a bit better).

@bhtooefr Mastodon is a hard sell as it is. Can you imagine getting people to try it of they have to download and install a client for their particular platform because Eugen & co. only provided a server-side API with no UI?

@starbreaker Considering how many commercial social networks start out as mobile app only? Eh, I think app-only could've worked.

@bhtooefr IMO, social media on mobile is like using Emacs with a standard PC keyboard: a great way to end up with RSI. We needed a way to use Mastodon on the desktop, and a web UI is better than nothing.

@starbreaker Well, that's what native clients are for. (Annoyingly, I haven't found a good one yet for desktop, to the point that I'm using an Electron wrapper client.)
