Once, as a young and foolish man, before social media was a thing, I wrote a letter to an author in which I pointed out all of the flaws I perceived in her novel.
This author could have simply ignored me. Instead, she somehow mustered up sufficient grandmotherly kindness to write a brief reply in which she said that if I really thought I could do better I should prove it, and let her know once I had a publication date.
