It just is performative sympathy because they think you could look them down if they didn’t do it. They’re just covering their social ass,

Ha, but here's the catch, they don't care if you actually look down on them, the important is the plausible deniability. They did everything "by the book", so if you look down on them for doing so, you must be the problem, not them.
