I've tried to assume that the GNOME developers have good reason for removing features, hiding configuration in gconf or the tweak tool, or making core gnome-shell functionality dependent on JavaScript-based extensions.

But removing the ability to run executable files from the file mangler has me thinking that GNOME developers honestly believe that their primary user story is a precocious toddler who needs adult supervision and can't be trusted with real Unix.

@starbreaker That ha always been my impression of GNOME.

That and they REALLY love Mac OS Classic.

@Canageek As a matter of fact, there is. Somebody forked KDE 3.x and continued working on it as the Trinity Desktop Environment.

It probably won't run on my Pi though. :(

(Right now I think it has LXDE on it)

@eladhen #xfce's a good choice, too. I haven't had much luck with #cinnamon, but I had tried a rather early version.

I find #Cinnamon very good. Both user friendly and not dumbed-down. #Xfce is my go-to for lean-and-mean machines. It has some quirks, but I know them pretty well, so I guess it's the old and comfortable coat...

@eladhen Good for you. I keep MATE installed both for my wife and to have some basic GTK apps, but I've found that the cwm window manager included with OpenBSD is everything I need. :)
