I have to say I am incredibly impressed with the character design of "Wonder Girl" in the dragons trap!
The playable female character looks distinctly different and feminine without using any gender stereotypes or sexualisation. It's subtle things and she doesn't look any less badass than her male counterpart.
Definately looking forward to playing it! Now please make a linux version :P
@deshipu alright I'll give you skinny. Games are horrible when it comes to body representation for women. And Yea, this one is no exception. But...
Both have long hair. Not sure where you see eyelashes on the female one. Maybe her eye strokes are bit thicker but that's about it.
And what u was mostly referring to is that most female characters in games are covered in pink bows and God knows what. Here they're both literally wearing the same armour.
@spacekookie Well, it's not as bad as the worst games out there, but it's also far from optimal.
Why do you even need gender in a platformer game? Why do you need to amplify the stupid notion of just two genders, and hammer that into the player's head? Why can't you just leave that to the player's imagination?
@deshipu I mean...yea, non-binary playable characters are awesome. But if the game already has a playable male character by default, wouldn't you agree that it's better to add a female option than to say "oh well, girls can pretend that's a chick?"
@spacekookie I would rather make that character neutral. Then again, in our culture everything is male by default, so even if it's neutral, it will be called male... I guess you can always use animals or aliens or whatever -- there is less of a tendency for gendering those.
Adding an option to the game that has no impact on the gameplay seems wrong to my game designer inner self, somehow.
@deshipu well yea you can't just Say "this is neutral" and ignore the entirety of human society and conditioning. We'll get there with time. Until then I'm happy about playable female characters because I don't like playing as a dude.
And it gives little girls rolemodels and the like. Making games more accessible etc etc
@spacekookie Consider for example Final Fantasy Tactics, which, even though it has detailed character artwork, leaves the questions of gender up to the player's imagination and chosen names. (Except for the Viera, who are female-only race in the Final Fantasy world): https://mastodon.technology/media/6kcuEVRt15eIITEc7eA
@spacekookie Hmm, let's see. Skinny, long hair, no armor, eyelashes. No stereotypes?
