Made a #MetaFilter post about Bayonetta. An obviously problematic video game. I wish it weren't such a great game to play because it has a disgustingly high amount of misogyny baked in.
A very interesting discussion is taking place regarding our responsibilities as gamers, how we vote with our dollar$ and the types of games we "enjoy".
@OchotonidKnight It's honestly a mixed bag.
She has agency and power and this is great. But crotch and ass shot camera angles that linger on her aren't the greatest, a male gaze is employed.
That being said, she's also a powerful symbol in the LGBTQ community.
Bayo is all of these things and it's interesting to think about how they're being marketed and sold in this game.
Interesting to me is that the Japanese marketing I have seen, at least for the Switch ports, tends to heavily emphasize the gameplay mechanics. But I suppose by this point she has already firmly established a name for herself, anyway.
@sonicbooming
Misogynistic? Literally every feminist woman I know loves Bayonetta. Helps a lot that her design actually came from a woman. She's a genuine feminine power-fantasy, which is so hard to recognize because there are so very, very few quite like her.
