Ok, so let's talk about the pirated version of #StarWarsTheLastJedi that I viewed recently.
It's a Chinese rip and the most fascinating thing is that the first time you're presented with a major character, there's this small caption/explanation of who they are.
Maybe this is common in other film markets, but it blew my god damn mind.

It'd also be a very good way to assist people with specific needs for visuals/audio.
Augmented Reality goggles that let you watch with a specific colour filter or provide a boost or reduction of audio.
@sonicbooming this, yes!
@sonicbooming AR goggles that put the subtitles at the bottom of the screen is top of my wishlist.
The current subtitlers at the theaters clip onto the seat and you have to move your field of vision to read the subtitles. It's definitely better than nothing, but it's not quite *there* yet.
3D glasses are pretty bullshit and gimmicky in my opinion.
But a theatre that offers these AR goggles would be fantastic.
@sonicbooming this is great, and I agree that making it optional would be the best.
@sonicbooming I've never seen this kind of annotation to a movie before, except as something ironic in a Tarantino movie. I like it!
@nelson @ThisQueerBashesBack I know right!! It's amazing! I feel like if I had some capital and was smart enough that this would be something to look at actually exploring. But that is WAAAY out of my league.
The reaction I'm getting just in this instance demonstrates how cool and helpful that technology would be. We're likely a ways off from it happening, but it's fascinating to ponder.
@sonicbooming I have seen this in Japanese home video releases of Western historical dramas, where the audience can’t be expected to have more than a vague idea of who a Roman emperor or pope was.
Lately in the Western tradition, this backstory is often reduced to a Blade Runner-type textual prologue or eliminated altogether, as it tends to trip up the purely visual/aural storytelling that Western filmmakers prefer.
I could see the industry moving in this direction with augmented reality.
Having glasses that allow you to turn on "annotations" or "director's notes/commentary".
And I'd be cool with it so long as its an OPTION. Like if you want to watch the film this way, enable that feature in your viewing settings menu.
