It's Nintendo so I guess I shouldn't be super surprised but, given the nature of the Octolings and Inklings, I wish that they had not defaulted to this kind of gender binary.

They're squids, just have one squid on screen and allow people to dress up the way they want. Ugh, it's 2018, we can do better.

This screenshot looks hacked. For one, there is Octoling Armor is clipping through the Basic Tee on the left model.

Also, male Octolings and, of course, female Inklings, are both playable.

@OchotonidKnight Looks like you're right, I didn't scrutinize it that much. Thanks for drawing attention to that.

I do still think that not having such rigid binary choices when it comes to choosing a persona/avatar would be better in more games.

Absolutely. However, it is worth noting that Nintendo heavily prioritized having recognizable designs over personalized input. Notably, this is why the only customization options there are (apart from gender performance) are skin and eye color (which don't affect the silhouette at all) and "hairstyle" (which may or may not be covered by headgear anyway).
