This is maybe an insane question but do some people still have beepers/pagers?

Is this something doctors still have? Would they eschew the modern smart-phone?

@sonicbooming I think I saw an explanation in a thread reddit once, it might've been something along the lines of reliability and not having to get everyone to download a communication app or something
lemme see if I can find the thread

@ionchy Cool. I'm just listening to a streamer and he started in on a rant about it and I was just wondering.

But yeah this makes sense.

@sonicbooming They are still around but increasingly rare. Within hospitals, I’ve seen more places with what are basically big private cordless phone systems rather than pagers. They are like partway between a DECT cordless you’d have at home and a cellular. You can page and also make/receive calls within the building. I assume there is a sign-in/assign procedure to map people to phone handsets somehow.

@sonicbooming
yes, pagers are still a thing - cell service isn't always available, whereas a page can get through...

@sonicbooming the agents use them in El Ministerio del Tiempo to get called into work when they maybe traveling through time... :D
