"Silence the RFID chip in your passport" this sounds like such a fucking bad idea on so many levels especially in a post 9/11 world.

Unless you LIKE cavity searches and being detained and treated like the government's bitch.

As a general rule I hate conversations about people. We all know that gossip is wrong. I have adopted a policy of not saying anything about anyone at anytime that I wouldn’t say if that person was in the room with me. Over the years I have learned that I really do not have much to say to a person’s face. I am content to allow people to live their lives as they see fit without any interference from me. I am neither God nor their mother so their lives are none of my business.

Facebook reminds me of a bar full of old men sitting around drinking beer. They are all lying to one another. Everyone knows that everyone is lying and it is no big deal in the bar. Unlike Facebook, however, what goes on in the bar stays in the bar. In the bar one assumes that everyone is drunk and lying but for some reason people have this quirk that makes them think that what they see on Facebook is truth.

One of the most moving pieces that I've heard in recent memory. Thank you 99% Invisible for producing this bit of satin for the ear and somewhat sad solace for the mind.

in the aftermath of #wannacry, I think that a shoutout to all sysadmins and security teams who patched promptly and prevented the issue is in order.

"Dune was revolutionary in a shocking number of ways—which is unsurprising, considering that [its designers] Olotka, Eberle, and Kittredge were the brains behind Cosmic Encounter, another game that paved the way for modern gaming."
A very nice review of a very classic board game: the namesake-novel inspired Dune.

As Mastodon grows, at some point there _will_ be a meltdown of some big instance into which tons of people put their trust and then the admin turns out not to be trustworthy (like the MtGox incident in Bitcoin). Even if it's a few hundred people affected, it will be major negative news.

People need to be educated about the role and power of instance admins.
