I've got this story inside. One about the rise and fall of an organization and the leadership lessons that are inherent in the story. The problem is that if I tell it, the fallen will know exactly who they are. Hmm.. maybe @soaklord's fables as a way to tell the story as a parable instead of as the company itself.
Why is leadership so very undervalued as a craft or academic pursuit? Everyone assumes they'll be a great boss. Very few are.
My favorite nerd quote today from Reddit…
"It is through my will alone,
I set the mail in motion!
Through the stick of Chap
The lips acquire slick
The stamp acquires spit
and your letter arrives Wednesday morning!"
I think the next time I am in the post office, I will have to repeat this as a mantra while standing in line.
@oceangrunge Years and years ago, I stumped a psychology professor when I took a test that showed me to be perfectly androgynous in personality. So, what pronoun? Andro? Drog?
So much this!!! http://theoatmeal.com/comics/believe
@Meshelly I would pound that thing every single time I was there, just in case. Do you have any idea the things I would accomplish if I could stop time?
@steveburnett If I ran a gas station, I think I'd program the screens to run Nyan Cat, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, and Badgers Badgers on loop.
@BleuTortue OK, but only if you also get Ricardo Montalban as Khan from Start Trek II. Because Chakra Khan would be the ultimate ink pun.
@QuietMisdreavus I read the same article. Having a couple of macs, I still wanted to build a hackintosh. Years and years ago I had it running on an old HP netbook (remember those?!?)
Strava was kind enough to recognize that I should be working harder and decided to discount (delete) 4 miles of my lunchtime ride. That way, I don’t get over confident in just how much effort I have put forth today.
@Meshelly I don't know, but I know that every single time I've cut myself with a razor in the last five years, it was because of the stupid rear blade (thumb blade in my mind). I don't use that for anything and find it far more harm than good.
How is @greatdismal not on here yet? This appears to be the perfect place for William Gibson to reside socially.
@robinjanssens That could work. If you could create a rail that allowed the electromagnetic pulses to pulse every so many feet or miles or whatever that acted as a pusher system until it was time to reverse the pulses to create drag, it seems you should be able to move people greater distances for less energy used.
Rail guns use electromagnetic pulses to propel an object up to high speeds. But I keep wondering if the same principle might work for propelling people movers at lower speeds. (same energy, higher mass, lower velocities)
I love the simplicity of this statement! (Came across it in a BBC article about the fall of western civilization)
Eventually, investment in complexity as a problem-solving strategy reaches a point of diminishing returns.

@Dauntless So do you eat twice as fast or half as much when that happens? My most profound lesson in leadership has been that there is no greater motivator than the gift of time. Money never motivated even my most avid sales teams as well as time off with pay did.
I think I have become manic in my complacency and desire for chaos. Half the time I am happy for the current status to endure, the other half the time, I am wanting change for the sake of change.
@Dauntless Is that how much time you are meant to spend working in a given hour? If so, you've got it made.
Why do I always return from my vacations feeling like I need a vacation?
@Jefeg It was meant as a joke.
