Domain fronting is critical to the open web https://blog.torproject.org/domain-fronting-critical-open-web
Tor is an open network, and all Tor relay IPs are public, which makes it simple for repressive governments to block them all.
Meek is a domain fronting pluggable transport that censored users rely on to bypass these blocks. Since Amazon and Google have blocked domain fronting, only Microsoft's Azure cloud still works, but Tor hears Microsoft might block it next.
Amazon and Google are pulling the plug on domain fronting, a crucial tool which helps our most vulnerable users get access to Tor when their countries don’t allow it. https://blog.torproject.org/domain-fronting-critical-open-web

Great blog post on Slack's "bait and switch".
https://opkode.com/blog/slacks-bait-and-switch/
"The reason email is federated, is because it was developed before surveillance capitalism was a thing and because it was established and entrenched long before these companies came around.
There's a reason why your email address is still the de facto way to sign up for any service on the web (sometimes with one or two degrees of separation), and it's because of federation."
Really, asking "what should replace Facebook" is putting things the wrong way around.
A more interesting way to ask the question is, "what did Facebook replace."
People used to build their own websites. People used to have blogs. People used USENET which was truly distributed and un-censorable.
Facebook and Google took the open internet and open standards and monetized and made everything crappy. Enough of that. Nothing should replace Facebook, it's done, stick a fork in it.
