We migrated to a new storage provider last night with minimal downtime (apart from live updated toots had broken images for a bit).
Here's how we did it:
* set up nginx proxy that tries new service, then old service if 404
* pointed CDN at proxy
* point uploads at new service
* copy ~50GB of media to new service
* ensure old service wasn't being hit anymore
* stop falling back on old service
* monitor
* point CDN to new service
* done!
