Found out Mastodon is a take on something called GNUsocial.
Reminds me of when Google Talk was a fancy branded port of Jabber.
I don't use Linux as my primary OS, but I have dabbled a bit and I was never a huge fan of Unity.
I'd love to see what Canonical can do to advance GNOME, if they choose to work on it more directly.
