The #AlgorithmicSegments book arrived today from the print. Very beautiful and quite thick at 116 pages. All texts are bilingual German/English. On the weekend, we'll put info on the Reagenz website on how to obtain copies.

The year is 2021, you still cannot sort file manager search results in #Gnome by date, because the author of the software thinks he doesn't need that feature. 🐧

Invitation to Mellite online workshop at Piksel
I'm doing a workshop on the __Mellite__ computer music environment at the Piksel festival ( https://21.piksel.no/piksel-festival/ ), which is hybrid this year, and the workshop will be online via BBB. The workshop will be on one of the festival days (Thu–Sat 18–20 November; probably fixed soon), and lasts max. 3 hours. It is open to anyone who wants to sign up, all you have to do is register by writing an e-mail to piksel21(AT)piksel.no.
A large part of the workshop will focus on real-time sound synthesis, based on a dialect of SuperCollider. No prior knowledge of Mellite or SuperCollider is needed, everyone is welcome.
Below is the preliminary contents Ahead of the workshop, the participants will receive information about installing the software needed.
### 1 - introduction and overview
- scope and possibilities of Mellite
- motivation and design behind it, and it is different from other systems
- tour of use case scenarios and realised projects
### 2 - getting started; language elements and real-time sound synthesis
- working with workspaces
- getting to know the editors, running examples
- writing your own sound synthesis functions:
language basics, elements of Scala and SuperCollider
- getting help, observing signals, finding documentation
- interconnecting sound processes
### 3 - exploring and extending the live improvisation interface
- design and usage of the Wolkenpumpe sub-system
- practising, exploring
- adding your own sound processes
### 4 - devising reactive control programs and user interfaces
- what is Mellite's reactive "patcher" language
- creating basic interactions and algorithms between elements
- bridging between the patcher logic and real-time sound processes
### optional (if time permits)
- introduction to non-realtime processing with FScape
- interfacing with other systems via OSC, freesound.org
Mellite 3.9.0 is published
#Mellite 3.9.0 is published, and can be installed via the launcher. It contains a ton of improvements and fixes.
Highlights are better coupling between control patches and sound synthesis objects (Trig/Act can be plugged into "key".tr and Action), no more confusing opening of several editor windows for the same object, log frequency mode for the spectrum analyzer, and many more.
Chances are, there will be another round of clean-ups before the Piksel workshop, with the aim of removing head-scratchers and annoying bugs. After the workshop, I shall also find time to make a new tutorial video to describe the updates in detail.
Meanwhile GitHub discussions is activated as alternative channel to Gitter chat.
I checked a couple of "white board" apps recently, and while I thought `xournal` was quite nice (and has a package in debian), I ended up using `excalidraw`, despite my hate for web based apps and anything run via node.js. You can clone it and run it locally, so no need to use internet based version.
Woopie, going to to #Piksel festival Bergen this year. Well, "going" - I have to find travel funds, perhaps it will have to be online participation. But in any case nice!
