Ubuntu Unity is dead: Desktop will switch back to GNOME next year https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/04/ubuntu-unity-is-dead-desktop-will-switch-back-to-gnome-next-year/ cc @colon_three
"By switching to GNOME, Canonical is also giving up on Mir and moving to the Wayland display server, another contender for replacing the X window system. Given the separate development paths of Mir and Wayland, "we have no real choice but to use Wayland when Ubuntu switches to GNOME by default," Hall told Ars. "Using Mir simply isn't an option we have.""
@schlink wayland was/is also a hell of a lot easier to contribute to
@colon_three yeah, sounded like Fedora won major points for using Wayland earlier than other distros.
What does Debian stretch use currently?
@schlink mine still uses x from memory but it's likely they'll be switching soon (i don't use my laptop enough at home to find out ><)
@schlink It's would have been a better choice at the beginning, providing resources to work on Wayland and Gnome instead of Unity and Mir, But I admire their choice because it's never too late ! (and they can focus on something else)
@colon_three @schlink has a cannonical run project been successful yet?
@schlink @colon_three
Is it open source? then it's up to the community. If it dies, it dies. My parents will probably be disappointed (even though they don't even know what Ubuntu is... it's just what I installed on their box) :joy:
