My neighborhood has better uptime than yours! ;)

instances.mastodon.xyz

@PreppyDude @kaydub I saw him on here, but I haven't seen him post. You may need to give him a lesson! ;) LOL

@PreppyDude @devBear Yeah, I'm not sure I like that. Choosing your instance means more than I thought!

@kaydub Can you Toot from your Airstream?! :)

@PomDauphine if you check out the about page for the instance you have chosen, it declares itself as "mostly french". What you will see, is EVERYTHING on your instance, and only the things from people on other instances, that people on your instance have followed.

TFW you cringe as you go through a yellow/red light to avoid slamming on your brakes, and then glance in your rear view mirror to see 3 more cars go through AFTER you! :open_mouth:

WHOA GOOD MORNING, I actually remembered this was a thing!

Do you guys remember Plurk? This feels very much like how Plurk felt back in the day.

@devBear @PreppyDude your test leaked into the samafunk broadcast communication system! 😉😂

@joerobb @PreppyDude maybe! Also, with the way federation works, I could definitely see topic-based servers!

@joerobb hey! Not sure if you'd recognize me, I follow on FB.

@PreppyDude besides, I'm only a hawk during basketball season. My diploma says I'm a Cat!

I didn't know it worked like this, but the federated view only shows the toots of people followed by others on your instance. So people on other instances that are not followed by anyone on your instance don't show up there. I somehow assumed it just showed everything.

For everyone confused by the whole federation thing, trying to compare it to Twitter... Forget Twitter. Think e-mail. You can choose between different e-mail providers on different domains or even host your own server instance. Then you can communicate across those instances with other users on them.
No, it doesn't make sense to "claim" your nickname everywhere. Yes, you should choose the server wisely because all your data reside on that server without an easy way to migrate them...

If someone helps you understand Mastodon, are they a "toot'er"?
