I know I hear a lot of guff about Telegram not being federated and such, but I really need to find a decent messaging app that my wife will want to use that doesn't lead to me getting called out by my manager for being on my phone.
@salmon_cannon have you tried Wire? It's open source, multiplatform without needing the phone nearby, does voice & video too. And it's marketed as a business app (so the boss should be happy) but is free for personal use. My wife didn't like all her contacts being merged in Telegram, but we could set up Wire using emails instead of cell numbers, and avoid that.
