im constantly scared of saying "x in javascript" as a joke now because it ends up happening anyway

my depression has been relatively ok recently, i'm just scared it'll start flaring up as exams get closer, it always does

@starbreaker I guess it's pretty important to distinguish between what's useful and what's true. I find it hard to pin down anything that's universally "true" about humans, which is different from having a working idea of what humans are generally like.

(I was reminded of this by the new Libertarian Socialist Rants video which I really disliked tbh, because it just ended up saying "this view of human nature is more correct, and supports my politics", even though it's politics I agree with.)

In the end it's a pretty ephemeral idea and pinning it down comes off as a waste of time more than anything. You can make "human nature" support any ideology you want depending on the data you choose to accept and what you think benefits that nature the most.

If you want to actually make someone consider different ideas, you have to keep their preconceptions in mind. Just saying "human nature is actually this different thing" doesn't work one bit. The entire point of Marx's project was using the axioms economists had come up with to show how they lead to contradictions. He didn't just make up some different system, which is what a lot of people end up doing when talking about human nature.

I really dislike most arguments about what constitutes human nature. Not just the capitalist ones, but the leftist ones too. At best it works as an internal model, but it isn't helpful when it comes to arguing/convincing others. Most of us already have a liberal, axiomatic idea of human nature pushed on us, and leftist attempts at changing that come down to "look, this axiom is better", usually with some pretty weak justifications.

good morning. today should go to exam revision, but more importantly, should i go back to esperanto or learn toki pona

kinda disappointed by streaky. ive listened to it a couple of times and it just feels...boring, hoping thats not the sound of the rest of the album

@queerhackerwitch *hugs* thank you, i'm doing what i can outside of medical transition, and honestly that's going better than i could've dreamt of, i just wish there was more i could do for myself and those i love

@queerhackerwitch it's pretty exhausting, but it does make me hopeful seeing other places implement less inhumane policies. i think i'm gonna go to bed, it's pretty late and i'm very tired. thank you so much, just talking to other people who've dealt with the same stuff is very helpful and i appreciate it a lot <3

i'm honestly really happy i joined mastodon. i left birdsite because of nazis doxing people adjacent to me, and considering the volume of wonderful people here i think that was a good call.

@queerhackerwitch the state stopped requiring sterilisation to legally change your gender marker two years ago, so violating the human rights of trans people is a non-issue i guess

@queerhackerwitch thankfully i misremembered and that isn't 100% their practice rn - they tried to suddenly make that happen but the backlash made them delay it basically. i wish it was illegal, but it really seems like it isn't.

@queerhackerwitch so if i were to try that it'd be a huge gambit because if it failed i would have no access to trans healthcare beyond DIY at all

@queerhackerwitch it used to bypass the gatekeeping a little bit but the institute in charge of providing treatment for all trans people here recently announced that they wouldn't touch anyone who's done DIY or gotten help elsewhere etc... which makes it a bit of a last resort. to my knowledge they're pretty hard to bypass as well, doctors aren't really permitted to give prescriptions for HRT without a diagnosis from them first.

@queerhackerwitch thank you! i live in norway so it's a pretty different situation i think. the healthcare itself isn't costly but getting access to it is nearly impossible and very strongly gatekept. idk if i'm quite at the point of doing DIY HRT yet but i'm considering it...tho i'll admit it scares me.
