hi everyone, if you are new to mastodon, please go to your settings, then the "other" category, then turn off search engine indexing. it's a safety feature that makes it a little bit harder for strangers to find your posts.

important note, I think this setting is only visible in the browser, not mobile.

@rigatonimonster yeah most masto apps don't have that option in settings, which is why it's really important for instances to opt out by default


this is also important for people who aren't themselves privacy conscious, as it's possible to find the posts of someone who's opted out through someone who hasn't

@rigatonimonster this works best if everyone does it. Because if someone from a different instance interacts with your posts it makes it accessible from their servers


Also consider whether this is something you actually want.

Being seen by less people is obviously safer, but it may come with downsides too if you actually want to share your content with an audience because you are a blogger, and artist, etc.

I don't know any of you, so strangers reading my posts is the whole reason I am here.
