Team Pebble just sent one last update to the official app. The description was basically "Welp, we're boned, but here's a thing to keep your watch working without our services." Think that's the first time a software update has made me tear up a little.
@skquinn geez, I'd forgotten about that. Such a bizarrely callous move, though a handy example of one of the perils of IOT.
@rhorsman Really, more like the perils of proprietary computing. If the devices had run free (GPL/BSD/MIT) software with full specs available, anyone could keep using them even though Google dba Nest ate the company that made them and decided to discontinue/shutdown the product. The environmentalist side of me is also quite Offended™ about otherwise usable gear going to waste as a result of Google's greed.
@rhorsman In fact I'm wondering if there's some way to flash other code onto those devices and use them for something, even if not their original purpose.
@rhorsman Great move on their part. Contrast this with what Google (dba Nest) did to Revolv devices after buying that company.
