Mark is a user on octodon.social. You can follow them or interact with them if you have an account anywhere in the fediverse. If you don't, you can sign up here.

so I think @jonnysun you might actually be the most famous aliebn here right now.

is there any way to find out which ppl i follow on twitter have mastodon accounts? is there like.. a way to link this somehow? or is that antithetical to mastodon's philosopHY OH WHOA IM GOIN OVER 140 CHARACTERS LOOK IM GOIN OVER 140 BABEY

Rule of Mastodition #17 : No one really understands (the) federation they only pretend to. So don't pay good latinum to somehow who says they can spread your toots.

So to improve search I plan to toot about computation, #artificialintelligence #machinelearning and other #computerscience ideas when appropriate.

Must find mastodon before the new season starts :robot:

We do call the users on the main mastodon.social node in the Federation Terrans right? I mean, obviously. #mastodonlingo

How many University of Waterloo students have we got in the Fediverse so far?

I can really see it now, the Federated timeline on cybre.space and octodon.social are different but a non-empty overlapping set. They have different speeds and probably different links to people on remote instances. So there *is* one true federate timeline to unite them all. But *no one* experience that timeline, we all see only smaller projections of it.

Are hashtag searches supposed to return results across federated servers? If so, that is not the result I am seeing.

ok, so new excitement. Each instance can remain open in separate tab. So another account could run in parallel for different uses. I know, apps for twitter allow this but this has a kind of seperation that seems cleaner. So @compthink is a new account I will use to talk more about computer science, artificial intelligence and machine learning...if that comes up. Did I mention it's actually in cybre space?

INTRO TO FEDERATION:

1. "mastodon" is a piece of software that runs on a server. There's a lot of servers that run it & u can follow ppl on other servers.

2. When u follow someone from another server, your server receives their toots.

3. The federated TL is all public toots that the server receives, ie all of the toots from everyone that ppl on your server follow.

4. ERGO: if u want to see more toots in the fed TL, follow + get other ppl on your server to follow ppl from other servers!

I just realized the content warning is going to be perfect for (spoilers!) Show more

ok, so federate timeline seriously needs a pause setting so I can read it.

Just in case you didn't see it, I finally made a Patreon:

It's actually really awesome that Mastodon attracted a shitload of users who largely aren't aware that the underlying GNUSocial platform is old.

You know why?

Because it means we can do this over and over.

Every time someone releases a new implementation with different-looking chrome on top, it can go through its own marketing and media cycle and garner new users. *And the network effect will be cumulative.*

ok, I'm more confused now. But maybe it's just syncing delay or maybe not all toots show up on federated if you follow them or maybe maybe maybe. No time now.

The instances thing is kind of neat, it's like you can tell what town people are from but it's not a real town it's a virtual town. If this becomes more popular will instances align by social tribe or merely be seen as ISPs where performance is all that matters? There is a bias towards community in those local instances.

I think I'm just going to block "news" accounts as a personal preference. I like the random chatter right now. I guess it can't last though.
