The whole @@ thing is growing on me, it's like click on someone's profile to see what town their from and if I know anyone there, or have a place there myself.
Rather than ask if #Mastodon will "catch on" contribute just a few dollars and it doesn't need to.
I just realized that Mastodon is awesome because it's all just people. My twitter stream is mostly a relentless flood of posts from not-people. I like it here.

Rule of Mastodition #33: There are furries. You might as well deal with it.
@mykola so it's saying when I try to register "Security verification failed. Are you blocking cookies?" but I'm pretty sure I'm not. I love cookies.
To be clear, everything except the first option only loads ONE status ONE time—not the entire feed of that user.

@mykola love the instance name. I may have found home for an alt account I want to make.
Mastodon: *paints beautiful wall mural*
Twitter: Who's gonna buy that? You can't even transport it?
Mastodon: *does an elaborate interpretive dance in front of the mural*
Twitter: Wait, is that part of the art?
Mastodon: *group meditation chanting "awooo"*
Twitter: Ok but how do you monetize?
Mastodon: *stretch*
Twitter: ...?
Mastodon: *a thousand voices sing a hymn to diversity as a million weirdos dance*
Twitter: We're, uh... we're going home now...
Mastodon: *builds space ship*

Ok, so it's seriously snowing here in #Kitchener now, this is not normal for April. It won't last a day but it's adding a strange, quiet aspect to the evening.
Whoa. Just went back to visit the birdcage and it was Hellish over there. It's been 24 hours and I'm already conditioned to find a constant flow of political panic unnerving.
technical note about this tech as I see some confusion/misconceptions:
Admins of your instance have complete control over your account. Really, we can read all the posts (including DMs) and we can even impersonate/hack your account with ease.
Make sure you trust your admins.
Here on toot.cat we have a CoC that applies to both admins and non admins. Admins are expected to abide by the CoC and not oppress users as well.
Mastodon has attracted people, and trolls have started to move in.
I want better social controls than birdsite. With Mastodon, though, the system's core is one guy.
If we want something done, we have to do it. That's the joy and heartache of open source.
So, what do we do? Is there an existing conversation or hashtag?
FRIENDLY REMINDER
These instances are not run on commercial servers that proprietary companies can afford. More often than not, these are hobbyists running an instance for the benefit of Mastodon.
DO NOT SPREAD WORD OF MASTODON WITHOUT CLARIFYING THIS. If you do, everyone coming will flock to Mastodon.social, which puts a strain on that one instance and makes it look bad. There are other instances for a reason.
Other than that small preparation, be sure to donate to your instance admin.
Rule of Mastodition #27 : @mastodon.social isn't going to open back up anytime soon. So stop waiting, pick another one and pitch in to their Patreon. Also, buy an Ale or get out of my bar!
Rule of Mastodition #58 : Don't be afraid to follow, or to block. Your instance is a world of its own, but the galaxy is vast and your time is worth too much to waste finding someone again or listening to someone ramble on about the best beach on Risa.
