i'm looking for a location in berlin where we could host a hackthon. if you are involved in any company, hackerspace, or coworking space where we could do this, it would be great to hear about it. for context: im a teacher at a school which teaches web dev to refugees and people who are unemployed. the students and staff are organizing a hackathon for ourselves and the public.
we are also looking for any other NGOs which want to come and pitch ideas for participants to work on!
futhermore if you are in tech in berlin and looking to find some talent, there will be soon-to graduate web dev students gathered in one place !

four sale and seven shoes ago,
a helpful FAQ:
“what about—“
is it software? yes? it’s bad
“don’t you literally get paid to write and operate software?”
yes. i also pay money to do both in form of a nonprofit
“why, if all software is bad?”
getting paid to plug poorly designed lego pieces into each other beats building missiles or starving in the streets, which were my other two options, and since i’m an optimist by nature (no, really) i’m still hoping i finally find or build the exception to the rule
“do you want a hug?”
yes
SOFTWARE: it’s bad!
I love this picture on so many levels.
For starters, the amount of care that the artist made in getting the machines and other computing paraphernalia correct.
But also because it encapsulates the promise that computers had in the 1970s. The sheer optimism that computers could really change the world in a positive way.
I still think they can. I refuse to believe that we've corrupted computing beyond that optimistic phase.
So, I fed the first edition of the Unix Programmer's Manual to botnik, and this happened:

giving. security. advice. to. someone. without. understanding. their. threat. model. is. dangerous. and. unethical.
if you’re going to blame humans for not fitting into the use cases of your favorite toys, do everyone a favor and go back to hackernews and stop trying to give #infosec advice to real folks.
we have to meet people where they are, and sometimes those places aren’t ideal. maybe they have an abuser with physical access, or just can’t afford an iOS device. They still deserve privacy.
Instead of diving into the news cycle, consider focusing on helping someone (or more than someone) out today.
The only way we will get things done is by lifting each other up one at a time. And the news will keep.

Reminder: in addition to your cat photos, I'm actively interested in article pitches from URM on Mastodon, Dat, etc and safety, security, fraud, privacy and/or who can participate. I want to hear how we can address this next set of challenges!
Are any of you interested in having your cat featured in an upcoming issue of The Recompiler? I always need submissions for our Cats & Computers page (what sort of computer your cat is hanging out with is up to you!). Email pics and photo credit to cats@recompilermag.com
