@catoutofbed (i've been dealing with this at work most recently in the context of Cassandra, the database, which has certain data it needs to hold in heap and if heap's too low it just sorta... goes away for 30 seconds at a time, but it's also not using G1GC, so I haven't done a deep dive into the sacred jvm memory tuning runes for G1GC yet)

@catoutofbed unless something massive changed in the java 8 garbage collector, multicore GC is for the lighter GCs that happen as part of everyday object lifecycles.
if heap is too low to handle its working set it'll still need to do semi-frequent "full" GCs, which block all threads while doing accounting of all reachable objects to try to reclaim it.
There's a Java flag that'll create a GC log; I _think_ the magic grep keyword in that log is "CMS failure"

@nev this is niche as hell but https://github.com/madengr/ham2mon : curses based UI for scanning multiple megahertz of radio spectrum at a time and recording/listening to multiple audio streams in it simultaneously (for monitoring an entire ham radio band for conversations, for instance)
