Happy Wednesday, gorgeous fediversians.

Anger is a tricky thing. Sometimes it's useful. You feel it for a reason, so you should always pay attention, but it may not be for the reason you think.

Keep your boundaries firm, but be slow to anger. If you feel that heat rising, get into the habit of taking a step back to measure it before reacting.

You'd be surprised what you can discover about yourself by exercising a little self reflection in the moment.

My cishetwhitemale sweetie, explaining to me why so many cishet men act like they wouldn’t say considerate, loving things about their romantic partners unless those partners are watching/listening: “They think of women as sex appliances. Or they’re scared of being called pussywhipped.”

DHS plans to massively expand its collection of data on citizens and foreigners, combining everything from biometrics to information about people’s “relationship patterns” and “encounters” with officers.

This plan is fatally flawed and must be stopped. eff.org/deeplinks/2018/06/hart source: twitter.com/eff/status/1006270

I think it's good people are talking about the differences in platforms and all that, but the blind side I see over and over again from white people no matter how they align politically is that they assume their experience is the baseline. And it isn't.

If you are white, you simply do not have the same experiences as non-white people online. If you're a dude, you are not a target like women are.

A common failing is that white people tend to assume interactions are uniform.

This is false.

Yo, we _need_ diversity. It's that simple. We cannot keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect thing to change.

We need women, LGBTI, Black, Brown, Native folks in the game because we need their ideas to push the community and culture forward. We need to make our spaces _more_ appealing to them because we need them. We need their insight, knowledge and experience to find solutions that elude dominant culture.

Diversity isn't a bullet point. It's literally life.

@Are0h Your Star Wars post the other day is what really hit home. Rather than dismissing certain behaviours as coming from a "small minority that doesn't represent all of us" etc, we SHOULD be calling the behaviour out!

Those two things are directly connected. One directly follows from the other.

@starbreaker Thanks for the question! It made me think about the topic in an entirely new way.

@starbreaker From my martial arts geek cousin: "I’m sure they are one of the same." But then he says, "The habit of exhale of the lungs (with or without a sound) does seem to create a more powerful strike" -- but exhaling without a sound is different from closed vocal folds stabilizing lung pressure & thus providing a point of leverage for shoulder & back muscles.

But then, "When I train on the heavy bag, the last set I go bananas/ape on the bag & yes the sounds become more violent & louder."

@starbreaker Great question! I’ll ask my martial arts geek cousin.

Vocal science from 1980s still true now: at 15:00, Serious violent physical action like trying to lift piano, we have to grunt like "Huh!" cuz need to close the vocal folds, to stabilize the breath pressure in lungs, which gives shoulder & back muscles a firm base to work against. Laryngectomy means no vocal fold closure, & u have to retrain other muscles to take over that function. youtube.com/watch?v=8VpgvqN-53
