Attended DePauw U, graduated from U of Washington, BS in Zoology.
Ph.D. from U of Oregon, Institute of Neurosci.
Spent a couple of years as a VAX system manager, specialist in image analysis.
Post-doc with M Bastiani at U of Utah, on insect neurodevelopment.
Taught at Temple U.
Now in Minnesota, until I die.
@ElectricMink Temple was lovely, but they didn't want me. Also, I was chasing a better teaching experience, and I gotta say…the small liberal arts college is really the best environment for that.
@pzmyers Excuses, excuses. -_^
@pzmyers The snow trapped you in didn't it? And that campus is about 2.4 hours from where I work.
@bradlibum Yeah, that's it. I got here in August 2000, and I've been stuck in the snow ever since. Hoping that global warming will melt the glaciers and free me soon.
@pzmyers Have you ever come across people who get scared because they have never seen snowplows, big tractors and combines out on public roads before?
@pzmyers very cool. I received my B.S. in Biology and currently in a Bioinformatics M.S. program at Northeastern University in Boston. On top of our scientific backgrounds, we both share the misery of endless winter
@Areya We need more bioinformatics people. It's a weakness in our program.
We also need to tell our incoming students that they need more math & computer science.
@pzmyers I agree with you on that. In an ideal world, I would like to focus on a hybrid of wet lab/computational work. I think that bridge needs to be formed between the two disciplines so everyone speaks the same language
Taking @pzmyers lead here. My professional bio:
Civil/Structural Engineer in Akron, Ohio. Trying to make sure your nearest cell tower doesn't collapse. (Good news: they usually don't.)
BS from Penn State. (Sorry about the sports culture... there really is a good university hidden underneath though.)
That's about it for now. More to add in the coming decades.
@pzmyers this would make a good #introduction
@pzmyers Come back to Temple!
