Man, 500 characters makes a huge difference. 500 is a paragraph, while 140 is a sentence.

@pzmyers Yeah, I like it. It's good to still have a limit, it still focuses your thoughts a bit, but turns out 140 maaaay not have been the optimal or most natural point to set it.
@pzmyers hopefully it promotes more rational discourse than seems to be possible in Twitter's model.
@pzmyers It was the one feature i wanted most in twitter. Especially because German sentences are on average longer than English ones.
@turi And truncating them meant losing the verbs.
