I have my doubts that the skeptic community in the UK had *that* big an impact, although they did have one. More likely is that second wave feminism in the UK leaned transphobic, as it did in a lot of places, and with more of an intellectual base to come up with justification for it they honed it into a fine art. Take that over to Mumsnet, where they were already credulous about threats to children, and there's your petrie dish full of nutrients, ready for explosive growth.
