@pzmyers In the same sense that there are no natural disasters, we might want to be cautious about saying the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 is “natural” — it was not bioengineered, nor was it a lab escape, but it is definitely the result of human action. There would have been Indigenous or local communities living in the forests where the Rhinolophus bats originally thrived, but industrial landscape change through clearing forests for timber and livestock destroyed the bat habitat and created the conditions for zoonotic crossover.
