On NPR, a black cosplayer said they thanked a white person cosplaying a black character for not doing blackface. That sure is depressing, like "Thank you for not doing an obviously shitty thing."

@KitRedgrave Racket seems to be relatively popular though.

@KitRedgrave What's the Scheme meme? Is related to that VR demo?

@animeirl I always thought the main problem of IE6 was slow development and large organizations refusing to upgrade.

@maiyannah What other FOSS projects are you thinking of?

I'll probably make more accounts at some point for this reason. Sometimes I want to wander into the void that is everything wrong with the internet. Sometimes I want an unabashed safe space. Is that really so strange?

If for some reason only one of those two extremes could exist, I'd definitely pick the former, because I value safe spaces more than the loose definition of free speech that is often used to uphold oppression, but I really don't think that choice is necessary.

When setting up an instance, please be as clear as possible about what kind of community you want to cultivate. Do you want to make it as safe as possible for your users and drastically limit federation if necessary? Are you fine with literally anything that isn't illegal? Somewhere in between? All of these communities can coexist and not get in each other's way if the boundaries are clearly set.

@KitRedgrave Make another account and hang out there sometimes.

@KitRedgrave Instances need to be as transparent as possible about what kind of space they're trying to create. It's good that that seems to be happening more and most accounts are young, so account migration isn't too painful.

@KitRedgrave I don't see why Mastodon can't have all the features for both a highly curated, safe, anti-harassment instance and a wild west, zero moderation instance. The division baffles me.

@Vavassor Capitalism has become way more ingrained in our minds than we like to admit.

@sarahjeong What part do you find most inconvenient? The small user base?

@datawench No problem. I use Clojure, but I know Tidal is more actively developed than the Clojure-based electronic music options. Overtone is pretty cool though.

@maiyannah The cultures of some instances just aren't compatible though. For example, the users of witches.town clearly don't want to interact with anyone from sealion.club at all. They joined that instance for a reason.

@star_zero Cool, good luck. Is it for school, job, or fun?

@star_zero Are they very different or just a little and it's hard to remember the differences? I know they're both JVM languages.
