I'm a designer and developer with 15+ years of professional experience and I would absolutely agree culture is more important than code.

I won't go as far to say as coding is easy, because it isn't. The effort it takes to create a platform is considerable. It's why we don't have that many options when it comes to social media.

But culture? That's HARD. Fostering an environment that's open and inclusive and limits abuse? That's so much more difficult.

I like Mastodon but I also kinda fuckin hate Mastodon because the closest I get to being in tech is the fact I built my PC which means I fundamentally don't connect with like 80% of the userbase.

Y’all, do not ever use Groupon+. They monitor every transaction you make with the card you used to sign up, even if it’s not a transaction using a Groupon.

I know because I’m sitting at a restaurant and just got an email from Groupon saying I’d missed out on a deal. They figured out I was at that restaurant by tracking my credit card. I disabled it as soon as I got the email but they must have tracked me for months.

PSA: if a user habitually boosts stuff you don't want to see, you can turn off boosts just for them without unfollowing them

view their profile in the regular masto UI and you'll see a "Hide boosts from X" in the hamburger menu

this can make the whole experience a lot less annoying, but it's not well-known!
