Mastodon feels like what social media should have always been. I can remember how cool it was to learn about other people and other cultures as a youngster listening to #shortwave radio. . .The "bird site" & "ad-book" were never like that. It was always a bunch of angry people posting pictures of angry things, arguing how awful everyone else is. No real exchange of culture & no real learning about others. I have enjoyed more here in a week than years on other social media. Well played, Mastodon!

Pornbot follows will be blocked. I mean, I like naked fun, but automated fuckpics for follows is creepy.

A radical suggestion: let's just get rid of follower counts

The other networks are built around skinner-boxing users into engagement, but there's no reason mastodon needs to be.

Yeah! :metal: From a blank DigitalOcean VM to a functioning Mastodon server in 51 minutes, including retries and resizing the instance to 1GB RAM.

Two tweaks to make to the install process, so I'm gonna tear it down and start all over again, then document that. Progress! :tada:

@GinnyMcQueen yeah honestly, even displaying follower counts irks me, like what's even the point other than e-status?

the less mastodon is like a popularity contest the better, accounts should be about the quality of their content, not their numbers

CWs aren't "censorship" or putting your toots behind some kinda wall, they're basically equivalent to lowering your voice so only the intended people can hear you in this crowded bar, as you talk about stuff that's potentially upsetting, TMI, or whatever.

People don't want CWs on "politics" (which really means "the news") because they're oversensitive and afraid of seeing the news, they read they news, they just don't want it to be a 24-hour punditry vortex in here.

RE: Politics CW: I budget time in the day to read news from vetted sources. If I wanted it shouted at me with color commentary, I'd still be reading Facebook.

I'm glad I live with a little cat who decides when bedtime is. He's rounded me up and is now bullying my partner out of the shower...

Preparing to teach a class on for next week, and being at the end of the process, I'm struck by the difference in reading a text to write about it, and reading a text to teach it. In the first case, it is 'What questions does this answer?' In the second, 'What questions does this ask?'

I hadn't really thought of that before.
