If there is no global username then that is a major flaw

@princessfluffy that's the price of federation in some sense, right?

@schlink No I don't agree. There needs to be clarity around users and their online name across instances

@princessfluffy I understand where you're coming from. If someone copped my name, photo, and bio on another instance and started imitating me I'm not sure how that'd play out; but as it stands I'd be at the mercy of the admin of their instance, which theoretically could be the imitating user.

@princessfluffy your global username is princessfluffy@octodon.social
So people on other instances would need to follow you using that user name. My understanding is you can not use that to login on other instances.

@chad But anyone can register the same username on a different instance - how many people will look at the @ extension to see that it is different - for many users this would be confusing

@princessfluffy yeah it took me some time to figure it out. That is a downfall to a decentralized social network. It's more like IRC than a typical social network on that front.

@oneoffsuit @princessfluffy For real. IRC was one of the things that brought me to learning more about computers and the internet.

@princessfluffy There is. It includes your instance name, just like email. This is how decentralization works.
