Anyone know of a readable document format that can handle deep structure? I'm looking for something that works like docbook but looks like markdown, if that's possible.

We see the surface of a tree, but internally it's a nested set of its previous selves. I'm trying to find a way to represent data like this: I want to only see the final composite most of the time, but sometimes I'd like to cut it in half and count the rings, so to speak.
