i'm sorry but if "incels" aren't willing to fuck each other, then they're just "cels"

@ardgedee both sides are pictured! (The back looks a lot like the front.)

Okay, retrocomputing nerds: anyone recognize this weird-ass midplane I've had kicking around? Probably old IBM equipment.

@jk Loudly defending the human brain because we bought one and now we're stuck using it, so we've retroactively decided all its worst traits are actually Important Features

So, why do I try to use old computers?

Because they are still out there! There are hundreds of models of various computers and computer adjacent devices out there, and many of them will continue to be functional, for some value of functional, for years to come.

But we stick them in drawers or donate them or put them in landfills and replace them with new shiny devices that do the same tasks, or maybe a little more, at the same speed, or maybe a little faster.

@qrs in most sixteenth century homes, the "key-pot" was situated in such a way that the house could easily be demolished once it was removed

I think I'm going to add an autoplaying audio clip to every web page I make of a laptop fan spinning up

just because it's behind a CW doesn't mean it's not oversharing

GIMP 2.10!

Officially put out today, and it's the largest ever release.

GIMP 2.10 is the result of six years of work that originally focused on porting the program to a new image processing engine, GEGL.

The new version ships with far more new features, including new and improved tools, better file formats support, usability improvements, revamped color management support, a plethora of improvements for digital painters.

@mala I remember reading this piece in the 90's. The Tony Ageh bit stuck with me.

if you're in NYC, please consider attending the final performance event for my NYU class on making computer-generated poetry. friday may 4th, 7:30pm-9pm at 721 Broadway in Manhattan gist.github.com/aparrish/29227 (also here's a fb event link if that's easier for you facebook.com/events/3242516481)

I'm really overwhelmed with the quality of the student work this year—if you're into poetry and/or computation you should definitely be there.
