@henryseg for myself, i've been putting off learning about them (and thus understanding the general loathing of them) for literal decades, and was curious. I was mostly spurred by this toot thread, though:

@phooky @henryseg If you don't have a good handle on transformation matrices, I'd start there. Once you get how a 4x4 matrix can operate on 3D geometry, you can get a better handle on what quaternions are doing.
