One of my favorite things to do while reading mid-20th century novels is to try to listen to any music mentioned in the text as I go along. I remember listening to a lot of crackly jazz while reading Cortazar's Hopscotch, and I'm currently listening to Primo Scala's Accordion Band while reading an excerpt from Gravity's Rainbow. It works perfectly.
