Follower counts are vestigial.
We must remove public follower counts. The sooner the better. The bloggers are coming.

Didn't follow the http://mastory.social/ discussion. Anyone has a link?
But if some people considered that what they published in their profiles was not *public* (and published there information that can endanger them), they must be brought to understand that they were misled..
Indexing profiles is ordering information that is publicly available already and would help everyone on the network (and therefore help further users to join).
I hope that a common understanding will be reached here <3
@jz Actually it looks like the discussion happened after I tooted it https://mstdn.fr/@amaelle_g/66947. You can ask @symac who's the developer :)
"Let's play a game, to help some of the newcomers make connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same."
Reminder that the solution we came up with for people who can't get along is for people to move instances where they get along with the community.
We don't all have to get along but we also can't make this place get toxic over disagreements. Don't make this place into birb site
I want exodus to happen. Freedom from centralized social networks.
Eugen wrote about scaling Mastodon to 43k users! Time to start studying… https://medium.com/@Gargron/scaling-mastodon-1becde463090
You know what I love about Mastodon, I see people debating whether some change should be made and if I don't think it should I just won't make it on my instance and that's the end of it. So the debate is informative and interesting and we all get to make real choices about what happens. Hosting services is a hassle but there are benefits that are easy to overlook
"If Mastodon is a revolution, it is a quiet one. It comes as a whisper, stirring the few people left who can imagine life outside the grips of corporate behemoths. Historically, paths that claim to lead away from capitalism tend to wend their way back to where they began, and frankly there isn't much reason to think Mastodon will be any different in that regard. But that never seems to stop people from trying"
--excerpt from an article I'm writing about (you guessed it) Mastodon.
Mastodon reminds me of Geocities and the early web. I mean that in a very positive way; it brings people together with other like-minded folk to share an online experience in a similar manner to the way Geocities did for people who wanted to publish their ideas in the 90s/00s. The expectation that permeates the birdsite that you should present yourself as a professional, or as funny, or socially adept, or whatever is missing here, and that's a really good thing.
If I survived prison I'd make my way doing this kind of shit. Or sharpening others' shivs, I guess. https://boingboing.net/2017/04/12/mother-necessity-where-would-w.html
iOS 10.3.1 update ATE my iPad Pro 12.9". Complained my device wasn't eligible for that release (after resetting it). Had to restore from iTunes factory reset. Now restoring settings from iCloud backup. Apple hasn't screwed one my devices that hard in many years. Good job.
If you want an IFTTT mastodon -> twitter crossposter:
1) make a new applet
2) Select Feed
3) enter "https://your.instance/users/username.atom"
4) Make the "Then That" post entityContent to twitter
5) Note that if you have over 140 characters it won't tweet
In prep for my Dad's memorial on Memorial Day weekend, my sweetie and I are working on deep tidying/cleaning the rooms in the house. We got the major things tidied/cleared, listed the drafting table and chair on craigslist (no bites yet, will probably have to relist at a lower price), and I'm now working on filing all the unfiled paperwork. The complication is dust and mold and allergies, but we're getting through it. #xpost
Given all the bickering about what ✅ means, I changed my 'centering' icon to ☵, which is the i ching trigram for 'water', which holds some personal meaning for me with respect to Taoism.
So cool to see @toofu exploring #VR with #Mastodon. Looking forward to giving his client a try. https://mastodon.cloud/web/statuses/397942
